The Average Size of the Vagina

Vagina Anatomy: What is truth about vagina size?

Vagina size is somewhat of a controversy amongst the sexes. Men feel that a woman’s vagina should be tight because that provides better stimulation for him. The fact is, a tight vagina usually indicates an un-aroused vagina and that usually means that sex will be a lot more painful for the woman. Because men have placed such a high opinion on smaller vaginal openings, many women fear that they are not pleasing their partners. But, if a man is complaining about vagina size, it is likely due to his own personal penile and erection issues then anything to do with the woman’s vagina size. Ladies, he may just not be getting as hard as he used to and is passing the buck!

To make sure that we’re on the same page here, anytime I refer to the vagina I am talking about the internal parts that can’t be seen, the vagina anatomy. When I refer to the vulva I am talking about the external parts that you can see. It is important to make that distinction. Vagina size is not dependent on height or weight it is dependent on other factors such as age, childbirth, and whether or not a woman’s PC muscles are toned.

Did you know?

Studies have recently shown that among healthy reproductive-age women, the vaginal length varied between 4.1 and 9.5 cm and the surface contact varied from 103.9-165 mm.

What truly affects vagina size?

The vagina is a muscle and when properly toned, through the use of Kegel exercises, will stay toned despite weight gain or loss, or growth spurts. Obviously, childbirth will stretch it out a little, but we are really talking millimeters here. The vagina is very elastic and can stretch enormously in length and width given the right circumstances. Age is another vagina size factor because as we grow older, our hormones change, we produce less estrogen, and the vaginal walls thin out a little. This is a good thing though; it means easier access to the elusive G-spot!

The vagina can be either relaxed or aroused. When it is relaxed, the walls are collapsed against each other and the cervix lays closer to the front. When it is aroused, the cervix pulls up and the vagina walls spread apart. This makes the vagina look longer and wider. However, the vagina doesn’t have to be aroused to have the walls spread apart. Anytime something is inserted, it does the same thing. It may not be comfortable to insert anything while not aroused, but it will expand to accommodate what is being inserted. For the most part, it does stay collapsed and this is to help prevent infections.

The Average Size of the Vagina

The average woman’s vagina size will vary given factors that I’ve previously mentioned. Typically, in the relaxed state, the vagina’s size is about 3.5 to 4 inches in length and less than 1 inch in diameter. The average vagina size aroused is 5 to 6 inches in length and 1.5 to 2.5 inches in diameter with the narrowest part at the vaginal opening. A fairly stretched vagina will look something like 8 to 9 inches in length and 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter. The diameter will be more during childbirth. However, the stretched vagina sizes are exceptions. While many women giving birth do experience this larger vaginal opening for a time, it will resort to its normal size afterwards. Think about it: you are pushing a baby through that opening. It has to expand or it would rip you to shreds. So it makes sense that you would experience a little stretching during this time.

Just keep in mind that while there are small variances in vagina size, they are not all that noticeable. Take a look at the tampon isle the next time that you go to your grocery store. Notice that the tampons don’t vary in sizes all that much, and the variances that you do see are slight and only to be able to absorb more fluid.

If women’s vaginas were so varied in size, there would be very different kinds of tampons, much like there are different sizes for condoms. The difference between vaginas would be as noticeable as a size ‘0’ pant size to a size ’22’ pant size.  …  Rest assured, ladies, because that’s just not the case. »

Fun Facts

When a woman is sexual aroused the vagina expands in both length and width.
